Sean Hus Var Hosts a Live Photo Shoot In Downtown Buffalo

September 4th, 2008

Prometheus 233 Studios has scheduled a high-profile photo shoot for Mind Askew, a photographic project by photographer Sean Hus Var scheduled for release in 2010. The shoot will take place on Thursday, September 4th at 7:00PM on location at the corner of Chippewa Street and Asbury Alley in Downtown Buffalo, where the set, models, and props will be in full view for the press and the public for the duration of the evening. The shoot explores an alternative reality of a classic pop culture icon.

Sean Hus Var is more than a committed photographer of over 15 years — he is also a modern storyteller. Using photography as a powerful medium, Sean takes classic myths, fairly tales, and pop culture concepts and creates skewed versions and alternate realities where new ideas exist simultaneously with their classic counterparts, waiting to become complete through the eyes of the viewer.  At the core of his art lies the idea that all realities exist simultaneously, and that objectivity remains elusive in the face of our own skewed version of events.

Mind Askew is an extensive photographic project that takes the viewer on a contemporary journey down the proverbial rabbit hole, intertwining sentiment and nostalgia with contemporary conceptual twists.  The final publication will feature over 200 shoots, such as Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Prometheus, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Don Quixote, Little Red Riding Hood, and more.  To find out more about the project, please check out the newly-launched website at www.mindaskew.com.

Get Squeaky!

April 2nd, 2008

Squeaky wheel has organized a critique night for local film makers who wish to have professionals in the industry take a close look and give constructive criticism.

The organization is composed of Brian Milbrand, former Kamikaze Studio organizer, Dorothea Braemer whose art can be seen all around Buffalo, Tammy McGovern, film editor deluxe, and Jax Deluca, queen of shocking installations. Squeaky Wheel has the capacity to review 16mm, super 8, DVD, Mini DV and VHS, but you will need to call ahead of time if the film is longer than 5 minutes.

Wednesday, April 9th @ 8PM

Also at Squeaky Wheel, two documentaries regarding rural life in China and the U.S.

In the summer of 2004, Chinese filmmaker Diedie Weng followed American scholar Carol Bliss and Mosuo writer Lamu Gatusa to collect traditional Mosuo folk songs for Carol’s research. Mosuo Song Journey presents a personal journey resonating with the singing of different generations of Mosuo people in a transitional period of their life under the influence of tourism, pop culture and education.

Surrounded by mountains, between the border of Yunnan and Sichuan Province in Southwest China, the Mosuo people live on the banks of Lugu Lake. For over a thousand years, Mosuo people have kept a Matrilineal tradition, in which women head the household. Mosuo sisters and brothers live in the family organized by the bloodline of their mothers. Within this unique background, the Mosuo have been encouraged by the State to develop tourism since the early 1990s. As a result, Mosuo society has started opening to the world and attracting increasing worldwide attention as “A Kingdom of Goddesses” from both tourists and scholars.

The film was produced in March 2007 and is 38 minutes long on DVD with subtitles

Shoot the Moon (45 mins.) documents Gentner’s Commission Market, a traditional livestock and junk auction in Springville, NY. Running every Wednesday throughout the year since 1939, Gentner’s is a rural institution. The freewheeling market is often overshadowed by story swapping and the old-time country atmosphere. “Filmmaker Seth Wochensky from Western New York is one of America’s most talented and perceptive rural filmmakers. Wochensky’s observational skills remind the viewer of the film of Les Blank. as does the filmmakers ability to earn the trust of his subjects.”

Gentner’s Commission Market takes place every Wednesday in Springville, NY. You can find fresh produce, sweet smelling flowers and perhaps some old photography and film tools that can be purchased for far less than they are worth. Consider stopping by and exploring.  The Music composition by Liam Bailey with Joe Foegen, Luke Wochensky and E.s. Wochensky managing sound. Featuring Traffic Attendant, Joe Kosek- Ozarks Regional Magazine.
